Since the dawn of Mans's conciousness, we have attributed the source of our nightmares to an unholy force serving it's own purpose while sitting in judgement of our weaknesses.
Today it is described as the Lord of Hell, King of the abyss, and the prince of Darkness. He is the general of the rebellious fallen angels and an archangel himself cast out of Heaven. He is the Beast, the Devil, the Lord of lies and the King of Demons. He is temptation, damnation, and the ultimate evil entity known by many names. An ancient evil responsible for all of the sins of man. He is assumed to be all of these things and much has been speculated as to his presence, his powers, and his influence, but little has actually been researched as to his origins. He was not always rendered the way he is now. There was a time when the image of Satan was quite different. Originally, that niche was filled by considerably less powerful entities and some the earliest depictions were not even as a man.
This text will attempt to review our earliest references to the overlord of the inferno to reveal the historic origins of Satan and Hell in popular folklore.
